The next step is to install IntelliJ Community Edition. It is easy to do, all we need is to select a color scheme. In this video series I used the IntelliJ Light scheme (white background), because errors are easier to spot. However, for normal coding work I use a variation of the Darcula scheme, where I have made the errors more pronounced. It tends to be easier on the eyes over many hours to have a darker background. In a Twitter poll, we found that 61.7% of Java programmer preferred Darcula, and just 27.7% IntelliJ Light.

We also install KeyPromoter, but that is entirely optional. KeyPromoter gives tips on what keyboard shortcuts we can use to accelerate our coding.
